IIRS External Student Internship 2026: Working alongside ISRO scientists is a big chance for any science or tech student. But the last date is close, and the rules are spread across a few pages. That makes it easy to miss something small, and one missed detail can cost you the chance.
On paper, the process looks simple. In reality, the college NOC or recommendation letter is the one document you can’t make yourself, so ask for it first. Also, applying doesn’t mean you’ll get a seat, because an IIRS faculty member has to agree to guide you.
Here you’ll find who can apply, the dates, the documents, the online steps, how selection works and the rules you must accept. You’ll also see what the official page doesn’t say, like any application fee. Everything below comes from the official IIRS pages.

Who Can Apply for the IIRS Student Internship?
Only Indian citizens can apply. You should be studying a UG, PG or PhD course in Science or Technology at a recognised university in India or abroad. Recent graduates are fine too, if they finished within six months of applying. The marks cut-off is:
Key Points
- Get your college NOC or recommendation letter ready first, because you upload it with the form.
- Apply only on the online portal, since email and post applications are rejected.
- Applying doesn't guarantee a seat, so check your portal login for updates.
- 60% aggregate marks, or
- A CGPA of 6.32 on a 10-point scale
Don’t confuse this with the Student Project Trainee Scheme, which has separate semester rules and runs offline.
What Is the Last Date to Apply for the Internship?
The official page gives 31 October as the last date, but it doesn’t show a closing time. Registrations run from 1 August to 31 October, and IIRS takes applications twice a year, with the other last date on 31 March.
The admission portal showed 5:30 PM for the March 2026 round. So assume a similar evening cut-off, and don’t leave the form for the final hour.
Which Documents Do You Need for the Application?
Your college has to issue the NOC, so ask for it today. While applying, you upload the NOC or recommendation letter and your academic documents. After selection, carry these to IIRS:
- Three passport-size colour photographs
- Original documents
- A valid government photo ID
- Your college or university ID card
It’s wise to check that your name is spelled the same on every document.
How Can You Apply for the IIRS Internship Online?
The whole process is online. Applications sent by email or post aren’t accepted. Follow these steps:
- Open the External Student Internship page on iirs.gov.in.
- Go to the IIRS admission portal (admissions.iirs.gov.in) and register or log in.
- Choose the External Student’s Internship Programme.
- Fill in your personal and academic details.
- Upload the NOC or recommendation letter and your academic documents.
- Submit the form before the last date.
The official page doesn’t list screen-by-screen steps, so follow the options shown on the portal. Keep your login details safe, because your selection update shows there.
How Does IIRS Select Students for the Internship?
Selection isn’t guaranteed. The respective IIRS unit checks your qualification, subjects, academic record, project duration and the faculty’s workload. A seat happens only if a faculty member agrees to guide you.
So choose a project area that matches your course, and describe your skills clearly. If you’re selected, you’ll get an email and the update also appears in your portal login. Students who aren’t selected get no message, so check the portal yourself.
What Rules Do Interns Have to Follow at IIRS?
Read these before you commit, especially the first two:
- No stipend, pay or financial help
- No accommodation at DoS/ISRO centres or units
- No extension of the internship period
- Access only to unclassified areas
- Clearance from the Centre or Unit before publishing any paper or report on your work
- Certificate only after satisfactory completion, an assignment report and its evaluation
Plan your travel and stay in advance, since IIRS helps with neither.
