PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme 2026: Getting a seat in a good college is hard. Paying the fees is harder. Fees, hostel and a laptop cost a lot, and banks often ask for property papers. Many families lose sleep over this.
This scheme says no property and no guarantor, and that is true. But there are rules many students miss. A seat from management quota or NRI quota does not count. The 3% interest help depends on family income. You also can’t get it if you already get another government scholarship or interest help. Read these rules before you apply.
Here you will see what you get, who can apply, which papers you need, how to apply and how to claim the interest help. All numbers come from the Ministry of Education, PIB and the official website.

What is the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme?
It is a government plan to help students study in top Indian colleges. You take a bank loan and don’t give a house or a guarantor. For loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, the government covers 75% of the bank’s loss if the loan is not repaid.
Many people think it is a scholarship. It is not. You must repay it, and the government pays only some interest, for a short time.
What do you get under the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme?
The first question most students ask is how much money they will get and what extra help comes with it. Here are all the benefits in one place, so you can see what fits you:
| Benefit | How much and how |
|---|---|
| Loan amount | No limit. Covers fees, hostel, food, a laptop and living costs |
| Interest rate | Bank can charge at most its EBLR (base rate) plus 0.5% |
| 3% interest help | Loan up to ₹10 lakh, family income up to ₹8 lakh, for 1 lakh new students a year |
| Full interest help | Technical or professional courses, family income up to ₹4.5 lakh |
| Repayment | Study years plus 1 year, then up to 15 years |
The study years plus 1 year are called the moratorium. Interest help works only in this time, and only on the first ₹10 lakh of your loan.
Who can apply for the PM Vidyalaxmi loan?
Many students think only toppers or poor families can apply, but that is not true. Any family income can apply for the loan, and income matters only for the interest help. You can apply if:
- You got a seat on merit or by entrance exam
- Your college is one of the 1,425 listed
- You registered with Aadhaar
- You stay enrolled and keep good results from year two
You can use the interest help and the 75% bank cover only once, for one UG, PG or integrated course. Another government scholarship, interest help or fee refund also stops the interest help.
Which documents do you need for the PM Vidyalaxmi loan?
Keep all your papers ready before you start, because the form goes much faster when everything is in one place. The website takes only PDF or JPEG files, up to 200 KB each, so scan and shrink them first. You will need:
- Class 10 marksheet
- Class 12, last exam or diploma marksheet
- Proof of admission
- Fee and cost list from your college
- Income proof from a government or college office
- Your photo and a parent’s photo
How to apply for the PM Vidyalaxmi loan?
If you also want the PM Vidyalaxmi loan benefit, follow the steps below carefully, one by one. This way you can apply the right way, without any trouble. Use only the official website, pmvidyalaxmi.co.in:
- Open pmvidyalaxmi.co.in and register as a student. Keep your mobile, email and Aadhaar ready.
- Fill the two-page Common Education Loan Application Form. Go slow and check each answer.
- Upload your scanned papers. Each file must be 200 KB or less.
- Pick up to three banks you’d like to apply to. Compare them before you choose.
- Read every detail once more, like your name, course and fees. Then submit.
- Open “Track Loan Application” now and then to see your status, and reply fast if your bank asks for more details.
You can have only one active application at a time, so fill the form fully before you submit. The official pages show no fixed last date, but apply soon after your admission is confirmed.
How do you claim the interest help?
Getting the loan is only half the work. After the bank pays out the loan, ask for the interest help on the portal and share your family income details.
Once approved, the money goes to your PM Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee App wallet, then to your loan account. For FY 2025-26, you can claim from 1 September to 31 December 2026, and your bank files the claim on the CSIS portal. My advice: ask your bank well before December ends.
